LOS ANGELES — In an effort to support residents in need, the city's sanitation department began collecting new and gently used men's, women's and children's clothing Tuesday for a clothing drive that is expected to end on March 1.

The LA Sanitation & Environment City Facilities Recycling Program is asking residents, businesses and city employees to donate washed and clean sweaters, jackets, shirts, pants and socks. Donated clothing will be given to St. Francis Center, LASAN's Livability Services Center and Inside Safe participants.

LASAN officials say they host clothing and other drives to benefit the community throughout the year as part of the department's commitment to public health and the environment. Along with clothing items, non-perishable food items and toiletries are also welcomed.

"In addition to getting vital supplies to those who need them most, these efforts also keep food, textiles and other materials out of the landfill in order to support L.A.'s climate and zero waste goals," the department said in a statement.

Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at various locations, such as:

  • East Valley District Yard, 11050 Pendleton St., Sun Valley;
  • West Valley District Yard, 8840 Vanalden Ave., Northridge;
