Barbara Dudley's husband, John Edwards, was shot and killed Monday night near his home on Prospect Avenue.

“I got a phone call. They tell me my husband is dead. They told me he got shot. That’s all I know. I went to the hospital, I got there and he was on the slap dead,” Dudley said.

At a memorial set up on Tuesday, neighbors honored Edwards with flowers and handwritten notes.

Rachel Sanchez, 30, says Edwards was a huge part of her life for 20 years, and that he was a military veteran who called himself “OG.”

“OG was the man. He was the man at every cookout. You need your car washed? He’s gonna clean it. We needed the pump opened. He got to open it. You need a window fixing or you need your heart fixed? He was gonna fix that, too,” Sanchez said.

The NYPD says a person drove onto the block firing a gun at around 10:30 p.m on Monday night, striking two other men who police believe were the intended targets. Both of them are expected to be okay.

Edwards, who police believe was not the intended target, was hit in the chest and rushed to St. Barnabas hospital.

He didn’t make it.

The 62-year-old was one of nine homicide victims over the holiday weekend. Sanchez says Edwards was disappointed in the rise of violence in the Bronx and told everyone to do the right thing.

“He was like my protector. Everybody’s protector. He’s telling all of us stay out of trouble, that there’s nothing out here. Last night, what happened was unfortunate and wasn’t deserving. I know in my heart, for a fact, it wasn’t meant for him. But you know what they say, bullets have no names, so they took an innocent person. An angel off earth,” Sanchez said.

And for his wife, she says that Edwards' death is hard to come to terms with.

“I love you so much. I wish you’d come back home,” Dudley said.

Those who knew Edwards say gun violence is out of control in this area, and they hope police can make the streets safer soon.
