ANAHEIM, Calif. – What would you do if you had plans to get married and then the coronavirus happened? In Anaheim at the Honda Center, the County of Orange is making it possible for couples who either had to postpone or cancel those plans altogether, to tie the the knot.

Saying “I do” has never overcome so many “don’ts."

Through glass... and in masks, Coronado couple Kevin and Sophia Lanning drove to the Honda Center in Anaheim on Monday to tie the knot in a civil ceremony, with Kevin’s mom serving as their witness.

They were supposed to get married in Santa Barbara, but like many couples the pandemic canceled their plans.

“We were going to try everything. We were going to fly to Phoenix to get married today. And thank goodness the Orange County Registrar decided to open, and now we can get married here without having to go to Phoenix," said Kevin.

The Lannings were one of about 60 couples to get hitched on Monday.

While it’s probably safe to say, none of them picked this venue, the Clerk-Recorder office was able to open back up in this parking lot off Katella and South Glassell, using ticket booths from the OC Fair and calling couples down the asphalt aisle, one by one to maintain safety regulations. The office canceled 800 reservations since closing on March 17.

Tim Forman and Mai Yokota came from Los Angeles, their witness, a three-month-old Yellow Lab named 'Kinaco,' tried to contain her excitement.

They literally couldn’t wait to get married with Mai about to start her residency in Massachusetts. It might not have been the kiss they envisioned but it made it just as official.

“It’s a pretty different experience. We shouldn’t take off our masks to kiss each other in public. I guess we’ll have to do it in a little bit,” says Forman.

With no guests allowed, it’s not the party any of these couples planned, but their vows are still as promising as ever...

“We just love one another, and we were going to do whatever it took to be married,” said Kevin.

Proving that love always finds a way.
