MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – An 11-year-old girl from Manhattan Beach is helping the homeless by sharing small pieces of comfort.

  • Eye-opening experience made young girl give back
  • Providing blankets to homeless
  • Delivers goods to U.S. Vets Inglewood

It all started with a short conversation Skye Fenton, and her family had with a homeless veteran in her community.

“He was telling us about how he was in the war and he was writing a book,” Fenton said.

The young girl said it was an eye-opening experience that made her want to give back.

“It’s really sad that these people are actually homeless and that’s why we are trying to help,” Fenton said.

Fenton started by filling 100 bags with blankets, tarps, and other essential items the homeless go without. However, she didn’t do it alone. She raised money with some friends through a bake sale, researched what items were needed, and made sure it got into the right hands.

Along with her mother, Fenton brought some of those bags to the U.S. Vets Inglewood center where they provide housing, and resources for homeless veterans.

They also got a chance to meet Kevin Kincey. Kincey is an outreach worker for the organization and was once a homeless veteran himself.

“Once you become, you get on this side of the fence, you start doing well, you want to reach back out and help the veterans who are still homeless,” Kincey said.

According to Kincey, the donations will give just enough comfort to help him connect people with the organization’s resources.

“When veterans are homeless in the community I believe they should be a little uncomfortable. It helps to get them back into housing. But, you don’t want to let anybody be cold, wet and sick,” Kincey said.

Fenton said she hasn’t seen the homeless veteran who inspired her to give back since. She hopes that he becomes one of the success stories like Kincey. Fenton plans to continue to make more bags as long as Kincey will be there to help her get the supplies into the right hands.
