LONG BEACH, Calif. — A 1926 Moroccan-style villa nestled in the Long Beach neighborhood of Naples Island looks like an ancient Christmas movie set, but it's not. It's owned by Jericho Poppler, a beloved local surfing champion.

As she prepares for the holidays, she said she looks forward to the visitors that come to enjoy the Christmas lights through the Naples Canals.

"Doors are open here, welcoming the public, because it's free," she said.

Bystanders and boats enjoy the free Christmas sights and lights.

Poppler, who happens to have a name that matches the Christmas scenery, was setting up her three wise men on the roof of her home.

After losing loved ones this year, she said the wisdom symbolized in the holiday, one of hope and new beginnings, is especially needed this time around.

"I go by the ancient standards of why we are here in celebrating our gratitude, peace, assurance and love. That's what I think this time of year is all about," she said.

As she waited to light up the stars displayed on top of the domes, she said the light of stars, symbolizing peace, is a message she hopes all will receive this year.

"We have to support everybody and be here for everybody. And open and generous, in our little or big ways."

And for Jericho, even a little light is a big gift.
