NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The year 2020 was a tough one for all high school athletes but especially those who play spring sports.

Corona del Mar boasts one of the top girls lacrosse programs in Southern California and last year it had championship aspirations, but unfortunately the pandemic didn't allow it.

This year the program is intent on making a championship run.

Senior attacker Shelby Glabman proves why lacrosse is one of the toughest sports out there and in a Spectrum News 1 exclusive, showed off her skills cradling and scoring goals.

"Most people think that girls lacrosse is no contact compared to boys lacrosse obviously because they have all the helmets and gear. All we have really is goggles and mouth guards. But I have the bruises to prove it. It gets really physical," Glabman said.

Corona del Mar Head Coach Jessica Murray has led the team to an impressive season and hopes the game's popularity will continue to grow. 

"I think it's just a really amazing team sport that highlights hand-eye coordination, speed, communication and most importantly teamwork. And I think for any child to be in a team is such a valuable lesson and gift for all of them," said Murray.

Shelby is headed to the University of Michigan in the fall and plans to stay involved in lacrosse.

Corona del Mar takes on Dos Pueblos next on Saturday 6/5 in a CIF semifinals match-up.
