LOS ANGELES — At Tuesday’s County Board of Supervisors meeting, activists and organizers called for the closure of Men’s Central Jail and for alternatives to secured mental health care facilities.
Supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn brought forward a motion that passed that they say will help address the mental health crisis in LA County Jails. The motion calls for “secured, non correctional mental health care” as well as “facilities for individuals to step down to as their behavioral health needs are stabilized.” Kathryn Barger brought forward another motion, calling for an exploration into “custodial, but secure mental health treatment facilities.”
