LOS ANGELES — Safe injection sites could soon open in Los Angeles County.

If signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, Senate Bill 57 would allow for overdose prevention programs to operate in LA, San Francisco and Oakland. The bill was authored by state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco).

The safe injection sites would have staff on hand to supply clean drug paraphernalia and needles. They would also be able to administer medication like Narcan, which can reverse an overdose.

The Senate Republican Caucus released a statement in opposition to SB 57, asking Newsom to veto the bill.
