WASHINGTON — More than 90% of federal workers have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by Monday's deadline set by President Joe Biden.

What You Need To Know

  • More than 90% of federal workers have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine by Monday's deadline set by President Joe Biden

  • Biden announced in September that all federal workers were required to undergo vaccination, with no test-out option, unless they secured an approved medical or religious exemption

  • A U.S. official said the vast majority of federal workers are fully vaccinated, and that a smaller number have pending or approved exceptions to the mandate

  • A full agency breakdown will be released Wednesday; 99% of employees in the Executive Office of the President are vaccinated

Biden announced in September that all federal workers were required to undergo vaccination, with no test-out option, unless they secured an approved medical or religious exemption.

Workers who are not in compliance are set to begin a "counseling" process that could ultimately result in their termination if they don't get a shot or secure an approved exception to vaccination.

"The deadline is this evening. And even once the deadline passes, as we've talked about, it's not a cliff. It's not an endpoint," White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients said in a Monday press briefing. "We'll continue to work with people, answer their questions, provide counseling and education and get more and more people vaccinated."

A full agency-by-agency breakdown will be released Wednesday, Zients said, before offering several top-lines from the upcoming report.

Around 95% of the 3.5 million-person federal workforce will be in compliance with the mandate ahead of Monday's deadline, with 90% of federal workers already vaccinated. Nearly 99% of employees in the Executive Office of the President are vaccinated.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) boasts a 98% compliance rate, and 25% of IRS employees got vaccinated after Biden announced the mandate; 99% of employees at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are also in compliance.

Zients noted that the country is "well set up for the holiday travel season," as 98% of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers are in compliance with the mandate, as are 93% of Transportation and Security Administration (TSA) agents and 99% of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) workforce.

The deadline is a major test of Biden's push to compel people across the country to get vaccinated. Beyond the federal worker rule, his administration is looking to compel large businesses to institute vaccinate-or-testing requirements, though plans for January enforcement have been on hold pending litigation.
