CALIFORNIA — Chalk it up to the sun, sand, and surf. California men have the longest life expectancy for males in all 50 states. At birth, they can expect to live 78.4 years, according to a new national vital statistics report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released Thursday.

California women have the second-longest life expectancy in the country at 83.1 years. The combined life expectancy for both genders in the state is 80.8 years.

Hawaiians had the highest life expectancy of all 50 states at 81 years, with Hawaii women enjoying the longest lives in the country: 84 years. Life expectancy at birth is higher for women in every state.

West Virginia had the shortest life expectancy in the nation, with men expected to live 71.7 years and women 77.3 years.  

The CDC report used 2018 mortality statistics and population estimates based on the 2010 Census, as well as 2018 Medicare data for individuals aged 66 to 99.
