WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, a plane landed a few minutes away from California Congresswoman Norma Torres’ district which held over 200 U.S. citizens who evacuated from Wuhan, the epicenter of the deadly coronavirus.

She accused the government of not having enough open communication with her district nor with the congressmen around her area and now Torres is working with a group of bipartisan lawmakers from Southern California.

The plane diverted from an Ontario Airport landing, which is in Torres’ district to the March Air Reserve Base, which is just about 30 minutes away, in Rep. Mark Takano’s district.

MORE ON THE CORONAVIRUS:

Torres sent a letter to the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Secretary of Health and Human Services demanding answers about this flight asking about the risks and what the government is doing to prevent those risks.

“I want to make sure that the federal government does its part and that provides the information that they need for them to do their job and provide the technical assistance that they may need in order to ensure that we are protecting not only the passengers but also our community,” said Torres.

The letter is signed by other congressmen like Congressman Takano and Republican Representative Ken Calvert of Corona.

Torres said constituents are concerned about how to keep themselves safe and that she wants to reassure them the government is using caution, but said that’s difficult if there isn’t open communication between offices.

The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed five coronavirus cases in the U.S., two of which are in California. Torres also joins other lawmakers to demand more answers from the CDC.

Torres said in a statement after the plane landed:

“The lack of communication or planning around this flight raises serious questions that cannot be ignored. Coronavirus is far from behind us, and ONT is still a repatriation center. I’m glad that the plane has safely landed, but in the coming days, I will demand the answers my community deserves before we find ourselves in the exact same situation still without a plan in place.”
