NATIONWIDE — A lot of people celebrate birthdays with a cold, sweet treat, and so does the world’s largest convenience store chain. Monday is Slurpee Day at 7-Elevens around the country, when customers are invited to “feel the freeze” — for free.

Available at 7-Eleven, Speedway and Stripes stores to visitors with a 7-Eleven or Speedway app, customers who fill up a special cup and check out with the app can get a free small Slurpee all day Monday. Customers can also redeem a free Slurpee through the 7NOW delivery app. The deal applies to all of the drink’s flavors, including the new Slurpee Day special What the Fanta.

The company says its customers have long referred to July 11, or 7/11, as Slurpee Day because of the chain stores’ signature drink. Now the company has made it official, christening July 11 Slurpee Day for the first time this year. The company has celebrated 7-Eleven Day since 2002.

Slurpees were inadvertently created in the late 1950s when inventor Omar Knedlik’s soda fountain broke, and he put the drinks in a freezer, which made them slushy. They’ve been available at 7-Eleven stores since 1965. Monday is the company’s 95th anniversary since opening as an icehouse storefront in Dallas, Texas, in 1927.
