LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Cal State Long Beach Shark Lab, established in 1966, will run out of state funding for shark beach safety by June of this year due to budget cuts.

Director Chris Lowe says the money helps fund things like buoys equipped with receivers that picks up on when tagged shark is swimming off the coast of Southern California. He says the receivers provide information that could help with public safety at our beaches.

The shark lab has tagged about 235 sharks and has receivers from Morro Bay to San Diego.

Lowe noted that he is working to find $7,000,000 in funding, including from private donors, to keep the lab going until the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
