LOS ANGELES — The two-year project involved 7,000 hours of participation from 3,000 volunteers encompassing five sites in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It’s the largest restoration project ever in the area.

The restoration reached 100,000 plantings, including 90,000 herbs and shrubs and 10,000 trees, all grown from native plant seeds collected in the area.

The project was designed to help counteract effects of prolonged drought and wildfires and bolster the native plant population.
