LOS ANGELES — “Rare Objects” is a film directed, produced and written by Katie Holmes. It is a story that centers on a young woman who reclaims her sense of self through her new job, new friends and healing.

The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Kathleen Tessaro.

“The characters and themes of the story really drew me to this creative endeavor,” said Holmes.

While the book and film take place in different time periods, Holmes says “what Benita and Diana go through seemed very relevant to women’s lives today.”

Because it is very expensive to make a time period movie in New York City, Holmes told Spectrum News having to pivot really made her think about why she wanted to make the film and what story she wanted to tell.

“It forces you to really know that story and know the pieces of the book you want to highlight,” she said.

For Holmes, it was about finding the themes she wanted to focus on like friendship, resilience and hope.

“Rare Objects” looks at mental health issues, loss, grief and trauma — things that happen to all of us, said actor Alan Cumming.

Both Cumming and actor Derek Luke praised Holmes in her role as actor, writer, producer and director.

“It was great. When you have a relationship with someone, and you see them evolve, you see them cocoon, and you see them become more of that butterfly. Not everyone gets that chance, especially in the area of art, to evolve the way she did. She wrote this, she is directing, acting, and she got it funded. That was a heroic nuance in itself,” said Luke.

“Rare Objects” stars Julia Mayorga as Benita, Alan Cumming as Peter Kessier and Derek Luke as Ben Winshaw.

“Rare Objects” opens in theaters and on demand April 14.
