LOS ANGELES — Based on a 1968 Richard Hooker novel and Robert Altman’s film adaptation, “M*A*S*H,” the television series, premiered Sep. 17, 1972.

Set during the Korean War, the series ran 11 seasons, longer than the duration of the Korean War.

Developed by Larry Gelbart, the series was groundbreaking in its blend of drama and comedy and for tackling themes unusual for the day.

A new documentary produced by Reelz called “M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever” chronicles the making of and lasting legacy of the series, which continues to hold a record for one of the most-watched finales of any TV show. The last episode aired on Feb. 28, 1983.
