LONG BEACH, Calif. — Summer lovin’ is in full swing in Long Beach where the all-American musical, "Grease," is being electrified with a cast that represents all of America.

Darius Rose — aka Jackie Cox — pulls double duty, playing both Miss Lynch and Teen Angel, performing "Beauty School Dropout" in full drag. They said they took their inspiration for the character from documentaries about drag during that period.

“There were queer people in the '50s. There were underground drag shows, and so I’m so excited we get to see that reflected," they said.

In its 70-year history, Musical Theatre West has done a lot of shows on their main stage but never "Grease." They made sure their Rydell High reflected the halls of Long Beach’s Wilson High School. The dancing is contemporary, and the population authentically reflects the current student body.

Monika Peña, who plays Sandy, says she cried when she got the part. “I mean ugly tears because I just never had that on my radar," she said. "You always see her as a Caucasian blonde woman, and I am not quite that, so I was just very happy to be able to be a Latina representing.”

"Grease" is running at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center through July 24.
