LOS ANGELES — In a town known for extravagance, the aesthetics of the Moulin Rouge fit right in.

The 10-time Tony award-winning “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” seems right at home in the already lush, red Pantages Theatre, which is big enough to house both the spinning windmill and the enormous elephant that towers to the left of the stage.

The show, like Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 movie, features a playlist of pop music and beyond — roughly 75 songs spanning 160 years of music.

And it doesn’t travel light. It takes a herd of 64 people and 13 trucks to move the show from city to city and perform it each night.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” will perform at the Pantages through Sept. 4.

It will be back in Southern California to play at the Segerstrom Center from Nov. 9 to 27.
