EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac plays the mysterious titular role in "The Card Counter," the new film written and directed by Paul Schrader.

On Spectrum News 1's "The LA Times Envelope Roundtable," Isaac opens up to host Michael Ordona about his character, known as William Tell.

"You've got a character that does his time for a horrible crime, but when he gets out, he feels like he hasn't done enough penance, that he doesn't deserve a regular life," Isaac said. "But he's too much of a coward to kill himself, so he chooses a purgatory for himself, which is low stakes gambling from casino to casino and, yeah, waiting for something to happen or just running out the clock."

The roundtable also features actors Javier Bardem, Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Dinklage, Andrew Garfield and Jared Leto. Click the arrow above to see Isaac discuss the film.
