LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Lakers star LeBron James had to watch most of the NBA playoffs at home this year, but at least he's a champion at the box office.
"Space Jam: A New Legacy," James' reboot of the 1996 film starring Michael Jordan and a cast of animated Warner Bros. stars, took in $31.6 million this weekend at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The new "Space Jam" beat out Marvel's "Black Widow," which took in $26.2 million Friday through Sunday, one week after scoring the biggest opening weekend of the pandemic era with $80 million.
"Space Jam: A New Legacy" is also streaming on the HBO Max subscription service, and "Black Widow" is available for an added fee of $30 on the Disney+ service.
"Escape Room: Tournament of Champions" was in third place, opening with $8.8 million, Comscore reported. The film is a sequel to 2019's "Escape Room."
Another franchise film, "F9," was fourth with $7.6 million, followed by "The Boss Baby 2: Family Business" with $4.7 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were "The Forever Purge" ($4.1 million), "A Quiet Place Part II" ($2.3 million), "Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain" ($1.9 million), "Cruella" ($1.1 million) and "Pig" ($945,000).
