In “The Water Man,” Lonnie Chavis’ character ventures into a Wild Horse forest in search of a mythic creature that could help save his dying mother. Here are five things you need to know about the film ahead of its release.

  1. David Oyelowo was initially locked in to only produce and star in "The Water Man." He stepped up to also direct at the suggestion of the film's writer, Emma Needell, after the original director fell through. Oprah Winfrey serves as executive producer.
  2. "This Is Us" fans will recognize Lonnie Chavis as the actor who plays the young version of Sterling K. Brown's Randall Pearson on the hit TV show.
  3. There are CGI elements in this adventurous movie, but the horses chasing Lonnie's character, Gunner, are real!
  4. Rosario Dawson, whose character Mary is dying of leukemia, and Lonnie's character show strength, devotion and an unbreakable mother and child bond.
  5. Oyelowo said he made the movie for his 12-year-old self, and for his children because he never saw actors who looked like him in the movies he loved as a child. He believes it is important for people to see themselves represented on the big and small screen.
