LOS ANGELES (CNS) — The North American box office roared back to life this weekend as Godzilla vs. Kong grossed $32.2 million Friday through Saturday in by far the best opening weekend for any film since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, according to industry estimates out Sunday.

Warner Bros.' revival of the two famous monster franchises earned $48.5 million overall in its first five days of release in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported. It was aided by the recent lifting of virus- related restrictions in some markets, including New York and California. According to Comscore, 55% of North American theaters are currently open.

The previous biggest opening weekend was for Wonder Woman 1984, which made $16.7 million during the Christmas period.

In second place this weekend was another movie making its debut, the horror film The Unholy, which took in $3.2 million. Last week's top- grossing film, Nobody, was third with $3.07 million.

Raya and the Last Dragon was fourth with $2.05 million, followed by Tom & Jerry with $1.41 million.

Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were The Girl Who Believes in Miracles ($580,068), The Courier ($452,201), Chaos Walking ($380,000), The Croods: A New Age ($210,000), and French Exit ($193,428).
