LOS ANGELES (CNS) — The Hollywood awards-season game of musical chairs continued Wednesday, with the Screen Actors Guild Awards moving to Easter Sunday, avoiding a conflict that arose when the Grammy Awards decided to hold its ceremony on the same day as SAG.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 27th annual SAG Awards were originally rescheduled for March 14. But last week, the Grammy Awards delayed its late-January show until the same date and time, creating an unusual awards season conflict.
With the Recording Academy unwilling to reconsider its choice of dates, the SAG Awards opted to move again, this time to 6 p.m. April 4 — Easter Sunday — while also cutting the traditional two-hour event in half.
"Throughout these challenging times, our industry and our union members have proven their creativity and resilience in discovering new methods of storytelling while adapting to new safety protocols and procedures," according to a statement released Wednesday. "We embrace that spirit as we re- imagine the SAG Awards with a one-hour special that highlights and expands on our signature `I am an Actor' opening and honors the outstanding performances of the past year."
Nominations for the SAG Awards will be announced February 4. The eligibility period for the awards has also been extended, honoring work released between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021.
