Mulan, the $200 million live action remake of the Disney animated classic, is finally ready for an audience, but you will have to pay $29.99 to see it on Disney+.
Just how well Mulan does will be determined by fans, who have waited a long time to see the epic adventure.
- Plans for a live-action remake began in 2010, but the project never came to fruition. In March 2015, a new attempt was announced, and Niki Caro was hired to direct the film in February 2017.
- Lead actress Liu Yifei was cast in the title role in November 2017, following a casting call of 1,000 actresses. The rest of the cast joined over the following year. Filming began in August 2018, and lasted through November, taking place in New Zealand and China.
- The film had a production budget of $200 million, making it the most expensive film ever made by a female director.
- It was just announced that Mulan will be released to all Disney+ subscribers at no extra charge on December 4, three months after it begins its run at $29.99 exclusively through the streaming service.
- In April 2020, it was announced that a Mulan sequel is in development at Disney.
