LOS ANGELES – Each night the mask is put on along with the chaps for a wrestler who goes by the name of Mexi.

He is one half of the duo known as the Sexi-Mexi’s, a wrestling tag team who performs as part of Lucha Vavoom.

“It’s been a lifelong dream of mine, I think every young fan of wrestling and lucha libre aspires to become one someday and I just happen to be one of the lucky ones that did,” says Mexi.

Mexi, who can’t give out his real name to protect his identity, has been wrestling for 10 years. He was born in Bellflower and raised in the Antelope Valley.

“In Lucha Libre the myth, the source of our power is based on our mask, so you never take it off, never take it off,” said Mexi.

Mexi added that there are a lot of people who don’t know he wrestles.

The Sexi Mexi’s left in their lowrider to arrive at the Mayan Theatre for Lucha Vavoom’s annual show dubbed, “PIN UPS N PIN Downs.” Lucha Vavoom is a variety show that combines Masked Mexican Wrestling, burlesque performance, aerial acts, comedy, and live music.

Sexi, the other half of the Sexi-Mexi’s, says it is the reaction from fans that gives him a rush.

“It’s just like the adrenaline going through my body and I’m just out there being sexy,” said Sexi.

Needless to say this isn’t your typical wrestling show.

“If it’s your first time here at Lucha Vavoom, prepare to have your mind blown,” said Mexi.

People have been watching Lucha Vavoom shows for nearly two decades, following these performers from L.A. to Tokyo and across the U.S.

The next show in Los Angeles is on Friday, May 1. Tickets start at $48.50.
