WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. — Dozens of students at El Camino Real Charter High School staged a walkout Tuesday to protest what they called recent antisemitic incidents on the Woodland Hills campus.
The students, many of them carrying Israeli flags, chanted “Stop the hate” and waved signs with slogans such as “Stand Against Antisemitism,” “Our love is stronger than your hate” and “Make school a safe environment.”
One student taking part in the protest told local media that another student called her an antisemitic slur last week, calling her a “dirty Jew,” then began punching her in the neck and back.
“I was sobbing from how terrified I was,” the student told the station. “That’s when the teacher realized, and all he did was just send me to the nurse’s office.”
School Executive Director David Hussey told local media the student involved in the altercation was disciplined, but he did not provide any specifics.
“Unfortunately, we cannot discuss student discipline,” he said. “That’s something the school does take care of privately. But as far as things being addressed, we hear concerns when they come to us and we address them to make sure everyone’s safe.”
Another student told the crowd a classmate openly express hatred toward Jewish people and talks about “wanting to harm others based on their religion.”
Hussey said the school does stress an anti-hate message to students.
“One is addressing the issues, maybe some students don’t know what they’re saying, and what the impacts are,” he told reporters. “So it’s educating those students, and then reassuring the other students that they’re safe at school.”
