As dozens of teachers and staff rally outside schools across Los Angeles, many students remain inside the classrooms. Yet more than a few of these students say that they don't think they're learning much during the strike.

Katherine Flores, a junior at Crenshaw High School, felt she needed to come to school to help prepare for college. But she says she simply sat in a gym.

“We’re not learning anything, Katherine said. “I was playing chess.”

She was so bored she asked her mom to pick her up around noon.

“She told me she’s not doing anything at the gym. No learning, no activity, nothing,” said Alma Flores, Katherine’s mom.  “So I decided to come pick her up.”

Katherine went home to have lunch, study her AP history book, and go to music class.

Her fellow student Miles Hollman stayed the whole day Monday, but regretted coming to school.

“It felt like a waste of my time,” Miles said. “I could actually be learning and doing more in school but we’re not doing nothing so it feels like it’s a waste.”

He doubts he’ll come back to school again during the strike.
