LOS ANGELES (CNS) — A COVID-19 testing site was established at Echo Park Lake over the weekend and will be open again for testing Tuesday, replacing a previous site at 2044 Reservoir St.

People can get a free test at the location, which is being operated in partnership with CORE Response, Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but the site is closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Appointments are required and can be booked here.

The site — between the park's children's playground and the lake — was moved from Reservoir Street to provide a "more convenient user experience" amid a surge in COVID-19 cases related to the omicron variant, Councilman Mitch O'Farrell said in an email to constituents Saturday.

The site is capable of conducting between 1,500 and 2,000 tests on days with the highest demand, but can typically do between 1,000 and 1,300 tests, according to O'Farrell's office.

On Sunday, Los Angeles County reported 43,883 new cases of COVID-19 and 53 additional deaths associated with the coronavirus.

"The extraordinarily high number of new cases reflects worrisome rates of community transmission," according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
