ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A local leading man is coming home for the role of his life.

Matt Kemp of Fairport is moving from understudy to the lead role when the Rochester Broadway Theatre League presents "Dear Evan Hansen" next month.

The Tony Award-winning show arrives in two weeks.

Kemp started professionally at the Geva Theatre before heading to the University of Michigan. He joined "Dear Evan Hansen" two weeks after he left college.

Extended family and local fans are expected to fill the Rochester Auditorium Theatre when he steps into the lead spotlight.

"Evan is fairly anxious in dealing with some different mental health issues," said Kemp. "And I think me in Fairport definitely had similar issues. So I think me stepping back into Rochester will have a very interesting effect during the musical."

Kemp plays the lead in "Dear Evan Hansen" on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. and on Sunday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m.
