The Hermosa Beach Pride Lifeguard Tower, which was painted in the six rainbow colors of the LGBTQ Pride Flag earlier this year, has been named a permanent installation to the city’s coastal landscape by Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn.

“The rainbow tower is beautiful and has become a symbol of this community’s love and support for LGBTQ rights,” Hahn said in a statement. “None of us wanted to see it painted over and I am proud to announce that the Pride Tower is here to stay.”

Hermosa Beach teen Izzy Bacallao generated the idea, bringing it to elected leaders not long after a rainbow-painted Pride lifeguard tower in Long Beach was destroyed by fire earlier this year. Hahn threw her support behind the idea, and Hermosa’s 13th Street lifeguard tower was rededicated during Hermosa’s Pride Month events in June.

The tower’s paint job was originally intended to be temporary, returning to its blue color at the end of the summer. The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors will now maintain the tower’s rainbow paint job year-round, as it does with a similar tower in Venice.
