LOS ANGELES — As more restaurants make the switch to sustainable foodware packaging, some owners are struggling with the added cost.

Annalisa Mastroianni Johnson is the owner of Annie’s Soul Delicious in LA. She is prioritizing switching from plastic to eco-friendly packaging, but estimates the price tag is at least an additional 5% to 10%, which can be costly in a business with thin margins.

Efforts to transition to a greener future have spurred companies, including Uber Eats, Visa and the city of LA, to launch grant programs to help restaurants switch to sustainable packaging.
