LOS ANGELES — Pulitzer Prize finalist Kate Soper was set to premiere her new opera “The Romance of the Rose” in 2020 when the pandemic halted the production. Three years later, Long Beach Opera is presenting the premiere in San Pedro. 

The opera is based on a 13th century French poem and presents allegorical characters, singing in a mix of disparate musical styles and genres. 

LBO presented Soper’s opera “Voices from the Killing Jar” in 2021.
