LOS ANGELES — Adoption fees for dogs and cats at the city of Los Angeles' six animal shelters will be reduced as part of month-long adoption event, officials announced Friday.

The Paula Kent Meehan Pet Care Foundation is sponsoring the Biggies and Meow-Meows Adoption event through July 31. During this time, adoption fees for dogs over 40 pounds are $51 — not including a $20 license fee for city residents — puppies are $75, cats are $12.50 and kittens are $25.

"Finding loving homes for pets in our centers is a collaborative effort between rescue partners, the community and LA Animal Services," said Staycee Dains, general manager for Department of Animal Services. "With our shelters beyond capacity with amazing pets, we are grateful for the continued support of the Paula Kent Meehan Pet Care Foundation to help us find homes for the animals in our care."

Dogs and cats adopted from LA Animal Services join their new families already spayed or neutered, vaccinated, licensed and microchipped.

Adopters also receive a Petco flyer with discounts to help make their pet adoption a success, a VCA Healthy Start Certificate, which provides up to $250 of follow up veterinary care within the first 14 days of adoption and, while supplies last, a complimentary dog or cat bed thanks to a donation from Chewy and Greater Good Charities. In addition, canine companions adopted from LA Animal Services are also eligible for free dog training classes at the Paws for Life K9 Rescue People & Pet Innovation Center in Mission Hills.

"This is an excellent opportunity to save a life by bringing home a great new companion animal and helping to ensure there is lifesaving space in the city shelters for animals with nowhere else to go," Bill Crowe, director of The Paula Kent Meehan Pet Care Foundation, said in a statement.
