SAN PEDRO, Calif. — Timmi the sea lion is the 10,000th patient to be released back into the wild by the Marine Mammal Care Center.

She marks a major milestone for thousands of marine mammals who have received a second chance at life since the center’s founding in 1992.

Timmi was being treated for Sarcocystis, a land-based parasite that can lead to systemic muscle damage if not treated.

The sea lion was rescued in August on Broad Beach in Malibu during the end of the largest harmful algal bloom on record to hit Southern California that strained the center’s resources.
