LOS ANGELES — Whether it’s drop-off boxes, early vote centers or the mail, voters have more options than ever when it comes to returning their ballots. But some people still prefer to do it the old-fashioned way: in person on Election Day.

Voters who woke up to rain today may regret that decision, especially if they do not have access to a car. Just as rain depresses voter turnout, lack of access to a personal vehicle also decreases the rate of voting, according to a 2020 Harvard University study that found 66% of people with access to a car voted in the 2018 general election compared with 36% of people who did not.

If you don’t have a car, don’t worry. Grab an umbrella because there are still a lot of good options. The following are the LA-area mobility providers offering free and discounted rides on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Metro

All day until 11:59 p.m. on Election Day, Metro is offering free rides on their different ways of getting around. Passengers on trains and buses will not have to pay a fare. Rides on its Micro vanpool service will be free to those who use the coupon code Vote2022.

Metro operates two different types of bike-share programs that will also be no charge for riders who use the promo code 110822. For its basic, pedal-bike rental, Metro bike sharing is free in 30-minute increments. The promo code can be used multiple times throughout the day for free rides. For its electric bikes, the Metro promo code can be used for one free 30-minute bike sharing, after which it will cost $1.75 for each additional half hour.

Ride-hailing

Lyft is offering 50% off its ride-sharing services, bike-sharing programs and scooters. Riders just need to have a Lyft account and preload the code VOTE22 to get the 50% discount. Those codes are available for use during voting hours.

Uber is only offering free rides to the polls for poll workers through a partnership with the group Power the Polls. Poll workers who’ve signed up through that group can get a voucher from Uber for rides to and from the polls that will cover the full cost of their rides up to $200. Those vouchers are good through Nov. 9.

Alto is offering 50% off rides to the polls for Alto members from 7 to 9 a.m. to riders who use the code VoteWithAlto.

Scooters

Lime is offering two free 30-minute rides to and from the polls. To access that deal, riders need to have the Lime app and use the code LimeToThePolls22. Bird scooter is also offering users two free rides of up to 30 minutes. That’s available on Election Day using the code VOTETODAY.
