LOS ANGELES — LAX passengers will be able to complete their applications for a REAL ID while traveling through the airport, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced Tuesday.

The pop-up program is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the DMV, United Airlines and Los Angeles World Airports to encourage state residents to get their REAL IDs before a new federal rule takes effect.

Starting next May, airplane travelers must have a valid passport or REAL ID to board flights in the United States.

The pop-up is available July 19, 21, 26 and 28 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in United Terminal 8.

To use the service, ticketed passengers and airport employees need to start their online application and upload the required documents at least 48 hours before getting to the airport.

DMV representatives will be set up inside Terminal 8 to meet with REAL ID applicants who bring their original uploaded documents and a copy of the page confirming they have uploaded them to the DMV website. To complete their application at the airport, they will need to provide a fingerprint and electronic signature and have their photo taken.

“Working together with United Airlines and LAX allows us to directly connect with the traveling public and provide them with a unique chance to get a REAL ID without a visit to a DMV office,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said in a statement announcing the pop-up. “Technology is making it easier for us to reach out to Californians and process applications using mobile tablets.”

Ordinarily, Californians seeking REAL IDs must visit a DMV office to complete their REAL ID applications. About 14 million Californians have so far received REAL IDs, according to the DMV.

Depending on demand for the LAX pop-up, the DMV may extend its availability.
