LOS ANGELES — August McAdoo loves to the play the “Go Kings Go” anthem on his piano because he loves his Kings and is huge fan of the team’s organist, Dieter Ruehle.

“It would be a dream of mine to actually play as his backup,” McAdoo said.

What You Need To Know

  • The Kings begin their season tonight at Staples Center against Minnesota

  • The team drafted Quinton Byfield with 2nd overall draft pick in the 2020 NHL Draft

  • Byfield is the highest selected Black player ever in a draft

  • Byfield will begin the season with team’s minor league affiliate, the Ontario Reign

He has been a fan since 1998 and has all types of Kings gear, including an apron, a signed jersey, and even a replica championship ring. But as a kid, growing up as a Black fan, he didn’t have many other friends who also enjoyed hockey.

“They were like ‘You like hockey? What Really? It’s a white dude sport,’ McAdoo explained.

“But I’m like yeah it’s a sport and its physical. On top of that it’s fun.”

He’s grown to appreciate the heritage of Black players in the NHL. He even met the very first Black player to ever play in the league Willie O’Ree. It’s why he’s thrilled the Kings drafted Quinton Byfield. He was selected with the second overall pick, the highest a Black player has ever been drafted. McAdoo is glad he’s coming to L.A.

“It goes beyond just seeing someone of my skin color actually playing the sport of hockey,” he said.

“It’s somebody that’s young, somebody that can relate to the youth.”

Just after he was drafted, Byfield explained what the moment meant to him.

“It just shows it’s a lot of opportunity for anyone in the world and you can play every sport and be successful in it,” Byfield said in October.

But now he is concerned about proving himself on the ice before he can truly a be a hero.

“You want to make a name for yourself before you can start doing stuff like that,” Byfield added this week.

McAdoo is ecstatic Byfield is here for what he will provide on and off the ice

“Someone that can bring a new brand of Kings hockey,” the fan said.

Fans won’t get to see Byfield with the Kings just yet. He will begin the season with team’s minor league affiliate, the Ontario Reign. But he is on his way soon enough.
