PASADENA, Calif. - It was the celebration heard round the world — soccer player Brandi Chastain on her knees, smile on her face, jersey in hand — and now it will be the celebration remembered forever.

On the 20th anniversary of the United State's Women's National Soccer Team's historic shootout win in the 1999 Women's World Cup, Chastain and several of her '99ers' teammates, were honored at the Rose Bowl Wednesday with the unveiling of a statue commemorating their win.

The statue is the first of its kind at America's Stadium to honor a female athlete.

The dedication came the same day the current U.S. Women's World Cup team was honored with a ticker tape parade through lower-Manhattan. Chastain said she hopes the statue will remind visitors of the progress that's been made in the women's game so far, and inspire young female athletes to continue in their fight for equality.
