- Former California gubernatorial candidate and longtime conservative radio show host Larry Elder suspended his longshot campaign in the 2024 Republican presidential primary on Thursday and endorsed former President Donald Trump
- Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, anti-Trump former Texas Rep. Will Hurd and millionaire Michigan businessman Perry Johnson have also dropped out in the last few months
- Along with Elder, none made the stage for either of the first two Republican debates and none polled higher than a couple percentage points at any given point
- Elder, who is Black, largely focused his 2024 presidential campaign on “the crisis of fatherlessness” and denying the existence of systemic racism in the U.S.
Elder is the latest in a string of minor candidates with nonexistent paths to the nomination to drop out. More established candidates with longer resumes in government and some polling success have largely stayed in the race, even as Trump continues to solidify his massive polling and fundraising leads.
“Now that I am exiting the race, I am proud to announce my endorsement of Donald Trump for President of the United States. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing conservative, America-first principles and policies that have benefited our great nation,” Elder said in a statement. “We must unite behind Donald Trump to beat Joe Biden and fight back against Biden’s unprecedented election interference and the left’s destruction of America.”
Elder said on X, the social media network formerly known as Twitter, that he “just met” with Trump on Thursday to offer his endorsement.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, anti-Trump former Texas Rep. Will Hurd and millionaire Michigan businessman Perry Johnson have also dropped out in the last few months. Along with Elder, none made the stage for either of the first two Republican debates and none polled higher than a couple percentage points at any given point.
He first ran for office in 2021, launching a failed bid to replace California Gov. Gavin Newsom during a recall election. Elder, who is Black, largely focused his 2024 presidential campaign on “the crisis of fatherlessness” and denying the existence of systemic racism in the United States.
“The breakdown of the family structure and the absence of positive father figures in the lives of many children have far-reaching consequences for our society, including the crime wave we are currently seeing in America today,” Elder said in his statement “I hope that my campaign has helped shine a light on these critical issues and sparked important conversations about how we can solve them.”
“Although I am suspending my campaign for president, my commitment to addressing the crisis of fatherlessness, promoting conservative ideals, and supporting the MAGA movement remains unwavering,” Elder continued. “I will continue to work tirelessly to advocate for the issues that matter most to the American people.”
Over the last month, polls have shown Elder’s support at 1% or less of the Republican primary electorate.
