LOS ANGELES (CNS) — The four-day United States Conference of Mayors’ 91st Meeting begins Friday in Columbus, Ohio with Mayor Karen Bass among the 10 mayors from Los Angeles and Orange counties set to attend.
Bass, Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson and Irvine Mayor Farrah Kahn are among the scheduled speakers Sunday at a “Best Practices Forum” on “Local Strategies to Reduce Homelessness.”
Bass is also set to speak Sunday about her efforts confronting homelessness and working with mayors across the nation to end homelessness.
The meeting’s priorities include public safety, technology, innovation, achieving “functional zero” homelessness and climate resiliency, according to Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez, the conference’s president.
There will also be “a major focus on the mental health crisis in America’s cities” and “a focus on how state legislatures are preempting city authority and imposing polices that conflict with the wishes of city residents,” Suarez said.
Mayors from six other cities in Los Angeles County have also registered for the meeting, along with one other from Orange County, Yorba Linda Mayor Eugene Hernandez, according to organizers.
In addition to Bass and Richardson, the other Los Angeles County mayors who have registered are Adele Andrade-Stadler (Alhambra); Julian Gold (Beverly Hills); Albert Vera (Culver City); Richard Montgomery (Manhattan Beach); Erik Lutz (Pico Rivera); and George Chen (Torrance).
The meeting at the Hilton Columbus Downtown concludes Monday.
Mayors from 192 cities with populations of 30,000 or more have registered for the meeting.
The trip is Bass’ first outside of California since May 4 when she flew to Chicago to appear at the 22nd annual “Ultimate Women’s Power Lunch,” a major Democratic fundraiser in Illinois hosted by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, where she gave advice to Chicago Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson.
