PASADENA, Calif. -- Michael Ocon stands in his living room, holding a rally poster of a monarch butterfly. Monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles for survival, and this Pasadena man relates, because his relatives did something similar.

“My mother’s family is Jewish and her family emigrated here during WW II escaping violence.”

His father’s family came from Mexico, and he says life has gotten harder for all of them in the last few years.

“There is a dangerous narrative being spread in this country that immigrants take more than they add, and it causes violence, it causes hate,” said Michael.

He’s trying to bring change to the system by getting involved, pro-immigration rally posters are hung all over his house.

“The importance of immigration in my life is respecting my ancestry, respecting my roots,” said Michael

So, he hopes to flood the political system with pro-immigrant people. To do that, this college student volunteers 20-30 hours a week for California Senator Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.

“Right now, I’m emailing some of my friends and student leaders at UCLA, USC, some of the CAL States in the area,” he said.

His mom also thinks Harris has what it takes.

“A female that has a strong mission and a strong purpose,” said Amy Lightfoot.

But with more than 20 democrats in the race, it might be hard for Harris to differentiate herself from her competition. But she’ll do it Ocon says, one speech at a time.

“I’m really excited for the rally, I love every opportunity to hear her speak,” he said.

They’ll both attend the senator’s first presidential rally in the Los Angeles area this Sunday, May 19. It will be held at Los Angeles Southwest College at 3:00 p.m. Ocon will be volunteering, his mother will be holding the immigration posters.

Ocon say he's excited about 2020.

“I feel hopeful about the future and I feel like we can get back to that place where we are more united than separated,” he said.
