Congressman Mark Takano had a few things to say about President Donald Trump taking credit for the unprecedented number of women elected to congress last year.

Dozens of female Democratic Congresswomen attended Trump's State of the Union address dressed in white Tuesday, as a tribute to the suffragette movement.

At one point the women in white stood to cheer the president's comment about the high numbers of women who have filled new jobs created under the Trump Administration. The president appeared slightly taken aback before telling the Democratic Congresswomen, "You weren't supposed to do that."

However, Takano, who represents California's 41st Congressional District, suggested that perhaps the president was missing the point.

"You know, I've got to tell you one thing," said the Congressman.

"The president was celebrating these unprecedented numbers of women elected to Congress and I said to Connor [Lam] next to me, I said 'We really can thank the president for helping to make this happen, because it was in response to him that so many women were elected.'"

"It's kind of a backhanded compliment to the president," he added.
