Ryann Blackshere Vargas is a proud SoCal resident and Spectrum News 1 reporter. Although she was born and raised in the area, Ryann learns something new about her community every day and finds pride in sharing the stories of people whose voices are rarely heard.

Ryann knows the California commute struggle too well and recalls her time as an intern when she would drive over two hours each morning to get to work on time. To lessen the drag of the drive, Ryann always kept the Dreamgirls soundtrack on hand (ask her to sing the whole soundtrack, she will!). Today, Ryann is the first place award winner for the Price Child Health and Welfare Journalism Award for her coverage of child welfare and foster care.

When she’s not at work, Ryann spends time cooking up new recipes with her family and binge-watching Law and Order: SVU.
