LOS ANGELES — It’s been two weeks since Metro launched their new ‘Tap-to-Exit’ pilot program at North Hollywood’s B line station.

The new system requires passengers to tap their Metro card while exiting the station, in addition to tapping in, to make sure every rider has paid their fare.

Metro says 93% of attacks on its system are believed to be carried out by passengers who haven’t paid to ride. It hopes this new program can increase safety by enforcing the system’s code of conduct.

Metro’s Stephen Tu, who heads the program, told Spectrum News that 5,100 fare evasions have been corrected so far, and reports of violent crime are trending downward based on data from the agency’s Transit Watch App.

However, riders say the system is flawed and dozens of passengers were seen evading fare gates despite the new tap-to-exit rule.
