LOS ANGELES — For the past 76 years, Los Angeles has been the perfect place to call home for Michele Scheiffer, a place where — until recently — she hardly experienced antisemitism.

According to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Office, Jews account for nearly 3% of California’s population. In 2022, Jews were more than 60% of religiously motivated hate crimes, crimes that heighten the fears among California’s faith communities amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

As part of California’s anti-hate crime agenda, the state has introduced the Golden State Plan to Counter Antisemitism, a plan that is more than just a plan to protect the Jewish community. It’s a plan to protect all of California.
