Just off old Route 66 in Victorville is a ranch in a desert oasis that is part of movie history — a location you can enjoy.

Scott Campbell is co-owner of Kemper Campbell Ranch, which has been in his family since 1924 when his grandparents bought 4,000 acres and instantly knew it was something special.

"People liked coming there," Campbell said.

Hollywood began to notice, and stars and celebrities started using the ranch for much-needed rest and relaxation in the 1930s and '40s. However, there was one stipulation back in the day.

"No alcohol," Campbell remembers. "My grandparents were teetotalers and did not allow drinking."

Celebrities like John Wayne notoriously got kicked off the ranch for drinking there.

"All these Hollywood people got to understand that was the rule," Campbell said. "So Orson Welles sent his screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz to stay sober and get 'Citizen Kane' written."

Mankiewicz's time at the ranch is one of the main storylines of the movie "Mank," which centers around the making of the legendary film "Citizen Kane." It was only fitting that director David Fincher had to film at the ranch as a backdrop for the film.

The ranch is currently open for anyone to book for weddings, events, or to stay and relax.

Fincher's production team helped the owners restore the ranch for the movie and all guests to enjoy in the future — thanks to some movie magic.

"It was a miracle for us, a slice of heaven," Campbell said. "We are so thankful for that whole experience."
