SANTA MONICA, Calif. – No children, no giggles, and no action. Esther Netter is still not used to walking through her empty museum meant for whimsical adventure.

“I close my eyes and can hear the laughter, the jumping, the exploration, and the play,” said Netter.

The Cayton Children’s Museum has only been open for eight months and of course did not expect a closure during this time when they are still so new.

MORE EDUCATION STORIES:

“While we may not have 50 years of reserves and all the relationships that longstanding institutions would have had the opportunity to nurture and curate, we can be nimble. We can be creative. We can be innovative,” said Netter.

The museum is using innovation to stay connected with the community. They are now hosting a daily Cayton Recess where employees will read books, teach art classes, play music and more on Instagram and YouTube.

Cayton Recess does not make a profit, but it allows the museum to be there for children and families during this challenging time.

“We are working hard to sustain ourselves through this closure and to make sure we can open with strength. We need your help. This is a vulnerable moment for us,” said Netter.

Netter wants to make it to the other side so Cayton can reopen.

She knows the museum will look different. They will most likely offer specific timed admission to limit the number of visitors. The museum will also follow whatever guidelines health officials mandate.

“When we are ready to reopen, we will open in a way that is safe and trusted because we are here for you,” said Netter.

The Cayton Museum is here for you to let loose and have fun after this time of isolation.
