SAN ANTONIO – A local candy company has become so popular it will now produce for one of America’s largest retailers.

Felix Samame came from Peru and is one of the founders and owners of Alamo Candy Company.
"When I came to the United States, I was in the U.S. Army. They drafted me during the Vietnam War to drive the tanks," Samame said.
He served from 1965 to 1967.
"I got married. I met my wife in San Antonio during the World Fair here in San Antonio," Samame added.
Now, they have three kids and three grandchildren all running their candy shop on Blanco Road, just north of downtown.
"When he came to the states, he came chasing the American Dream. My father always knew he was going to be a business man either selling houses or selling candy," William Samame said.
Felix Samame said he learned from visiting various grocery stores that there was a lack in products from Mexico.
"My mother, having the mother's touch and being the great cook that she is, she just started making candy," William Samame said.
And now, their shop and factory will produce for the American giant retailer, Walmart.
Each year, Walmart hosts an open call for US-manufactured products, giving many a shot at the American dream and offering business of all sizes an opportunity for a big break.
Alamo Candy Company was selected as a new supplier. The family-owned and operated business opened its doors in 1991, starting with a handful of candies and growing their business to more than 70 products including the fan-favorite Chamoy pickles Chinese candy.
