With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, several organizations across Southern California are holding events to offer resources and encourage residents to take action to protect their well-being.
Here’s a roundup of some community events to check out.
Classic Slam Mental Health

Happening from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 25, videos gathered from Classic Slam will be premiered and discussed. This event will connect hundreds of students from schools throughout LA.
Sound the Alarm About Our Feelings
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 10, this event will connect community members to mental health resources at the Tower of Faith Evangelistic Church at 4323 E. Rosecrans Ave., in Compton. There will be a speaker, information sessions, lunch and food distribution.
Mend Your Mind

Attendees will be able to explore different forms of self-care, including yoga, art, music, sound baths, and more. Those attending this Los Angeles event from noon to 7 p.m. on May 27 will also get to hear from mental health experts and enjoy snacks.
Celebration AAPIHM & Take Action for Mental Health LA

This event in El Monte will focus on promoting awareness, specifically on the well-being of Chinese communities. Happening from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 27, the event will also celebrate the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which also takes place in May.
Conversations Of An Unspoken Truth

Gardena, CA 90247
Geared toward women and girls ages 16 and older, this event in Gardena will focus on sexual assault and violence against women, including the effects those issues hold on mental health, families and communities. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 24.
WOW: Wombat on Wheels

This event in Glendale will highlight the importance of mental health and increase awareness of how and where to access mental health resources. It will include a roller skating and drag performance at Moonlight Rollerway from 11:45 p.m. to 2 a.m. on May 13.
Drumming for Your Life Institute — Community Drumming Circle

Harbor City, CA 90710
Head over to Harbor City Gateway Branch Library from 3:30 to 5 p.m. June 8 for a drum circle meant to empower participants to create a better life for themselves and their community through mental healing and support.
Student Mental Health Matters

A Student Mental Health Matters event will take place during school hours at Bernstein High School in Hollywood, where the school community was rocked by the death of a student who overdosed. The lunchtime event from noon to 2 p.m. will take place on May 19 for students and community members. It will be held in the lunch quad and include tabling activities where peer-to-peer student leaders will engage fellow peers and school staff in activities to promote and raise awareness. Informational materials also will be shared around youth mental health data and resources. In addition, students will be engaged in games and interactive activities around topics of youth mental health.
Coping, Cocoa + Canvas

Head over to Lennox Park to join a conversation on healthy coping and enjoy hot cocoa and canvas painting. The event, happening from 4 to 6 p.m. on May 31, is for youth ages 12 to 17.
Mental Wellness

Service providers will be in attendance to take part in discussions, activities and resource sharing at this Long Beach event. The event, put on by the nonprofit Love Beyond Limits, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 24. Lunch will be provided.
Break the Stigma: A Community Mental Health Event

Food, entertainment, family bonding activities and more will be provided at this LA event, which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on May 20. Its aim is to connect the community to mental health partners and providers.
Fun in the Sun Festival

The National Alliance on Mental Health in Orange County will host a no-cost festival on May 6 at Orangethorpe Elementary School in Fullerton. From carnival snacks to raffles and games, the festival will have it all and will also provide resources to the community and make them aware of the mental health clinics, support groups and advocacy organizations available to provide support. Mental Health Awareness Fair

As a way to start a conversation around mental health, the Riverside University Health System is encouraging residents to wear a lime green ribbon, which they say has emerged as California’s color for mental health awareness. It is also hosting three fairs to provide resources to the community. The fair at Fairmount Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 18 is one of three in the area. The free events will not only include food, music and a fun zone — but they will also connect residents to organizations, advocates and services.
Empower up! Your Mental Health Wellness
A free event featuring talks by local youth, workshops and activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 4 at Cal Lutheran University.
