Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced this week he is still undecided on if he will run for reelection in 2024. McCarthy was ousted from his speakership position, less than nine months after being sworn in.

To discuss McCarthy’s future, and the future of California’s congressional leadership, former Rep. Mimi Walters sat down with “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh.

“I hope [McCarthy] does run for reelection. He’s been such a champion for us here in California,” Walters said.

The former Orange County representative said she was disappointed when McCarthy was removed as House Speaker, calling it a poor decision on the conference’s part.

If he chooses not to run, McCarthy wouldn’t be the only representative from California not to seek reelection, as a number of representatives have chosen to retire or are running for the Senate. This could leave California without many senior representatives.

“This is inevitable. People serve and then it’s time for them to move on or they run for a different office,” Walters said. “California has the most members of any state, so we carry a lot of weight regardless, whether are members are in senior positions or not.”

Walters also weighed in on the debate between California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Walters first emphasized she is a Republican, before declaring DeSantis as the winner of last night’s debate.

“I clearly believe that Ron DeSantis did a much better job. I mean he talked about the economic issues, taxes, the price of gas [and] crime. When the stats were put up on the board, there was just no comparison from an economic perspective and a public safety perspective,” Walters said.
